Jesus in our text addresses the topic of faith using the size of the mustard seed in relation to uprooting a sycamine tree. I believe one of the reasons why Jesus used a mustard seed is to help us understand that even if we think our faith is small it can still do the impossible. Therefore, the emphasis of faith is not really about its size but its potency when put to action through “SAYING” i.e. speaking, which is how we put faith to action. No matter how small you think your faith is, the action of speaking can make the impossible happen. With this in mind we can address the next point, which is about directing our faith to a specific target or situation. Our text emphasizes speaking to the ROOT of the tree not just speaking to the tree.
Why is this important?
The root is what holds the tree in place; it is the strength of the tree and the organ that accesses nutrients from the ground. This means that in order to deal with problems or issues that seem impossible, we can either remove or reverse them by locating the root of the problem. As simple as this may seem, it is not that easy especially because you generally do not see the root of a tree.In order to locate the root of the tree you must dig the ground. This therefore implies that locating the root of a problem might require some digging.
This could involve conducting a research on our ancestry or bloodline to possibly locate the origin of a specific problem. An example of this was when sin of immorality which I believe travelled from Jesse (Psalm 51:5) to David (2 Samuel11:4) to Annon (2 Samuel13:14) to Absalom (2 Samuel16:22) to Adonijah who requested for David’s damsel (1kings 2:17) and finally to Solomon who doesn’t need any introduction. Digging can also be likened to the process a doctor goes through when inquiring about the health status of one’s family in order to establish a family history or pattern. Once a pattern is established or the root of the issue is known, the doctor recommends the treatment, which could vary from a cocktail prescription of drugs to a procedure depending on the condition. With reference to our text, the point of speaking to the root of the tree can also be likened to recommending a treatment.
